Counties Celebrate Freedom For All This Juneteenth

Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to take control of the state and ensure all enslaved people be freed, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed and as the Civil War came to a close.

Juneteenth gets its name by combining both "June" and "nineteenth," for June 19, 1865, the day that Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston with his announcement.

Formerly known as Jubilee Day, Freedom Day, or Emancipation Day, Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.

On June 17, 2021, it officially became a federal holiday.

"On Juneteenth, we recommit ourselves to the work of equity, equality, and justice. And, we celebrate the centuries of struggle, courage, and hope that have brought us to this time of progress and possibility. That work has been led throughout our history by abolitionists and educators, civil rights advocates and lawyers, courageous activists and trade unionists, public officials, and everyday Americans who have helped make real the ideals of our founding documents for all,” A Proclamation on Juneteenth Day of Observance, 2021, President Joseph Biden.
