Westchester County Executive George Latimer Honored by County Leaders for his ongoing Public Service

The New York State Association of Counties (NYSAC) and the New York State County Executives Association (NYSCEA) today honored Westchester County Executive George Latimer as he prepares to transition from his current role to become a member of Congress later this week.

George Latimer has been a dedicated and transformative leader for Westchester County since taking office in 2018. Latimer has been an active member of both NYSAC and NYSCEA, and his local leadership and commitment to strengthening his community has served as a model for county leaders from across the state. Before serving as county executive, Latimer served in the New York State Legislature for 13 years, first in the State Assembly and then in the State Senate. Prior to his state service, Latimer served in the County Legislature for 13 years.

“As George embarks on his new journey in Congress, NYSAC and our county members extend our heartfelt gratitude for his countless contributions to Westchester County and his exemplary service as a state and county leader,” said NYSAC Executive Director Stephen J. Acquario. “His legacy as County Executive will be remembered for years to come, and we are confident that he will continue to serve with distinction in his new role, bringing his state and local experience to bare as he works on national policy.”

During his tenure, Latimer has been instrumental in implementing numerous initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life for county residents, enhancing infrastructure, and promoting sustainable development. His visionary approach and collaborative spirit have set a high standard for public service and governance.

“Congressman-elect Latimer has been an excellent County Executive for the people of Westchester County since 2018, and he will continue to serve them with dedication and distinction as their representative in Congress,” stated Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus. “It’s been a privilege to know and work with George for over a decade now, and I look forward to the great work he will do in his new role.”

In 2022, County Executive Latimer received the NYSAC Executive Director’s Public Service Award for his service during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Westchester County had the first documented case of the coronavirus in New York, and Latimer’s response became a model that all other county leaders adopted during the first phase of the pandemic in New York. “His example guided county leaders across the state. We’re incredibly proud to count him as one of our members and congratulate him on his transition to Congress,” said Acquario.

“Over the past several years, George has demonstrated unwavering commitment, exceptional leadership, and a deep dedication to serving the residents of Westchester County. As a friend and a colleague here in Westchester County, I know firsthand George’s dedication to our communities, and I look forward to working with him as a member of Congress,” said NYSAC President Benjamin Boykin II, a former chairman and current member of the Westchester County Legislature.

NYSAC was established by county officials in 1925. Its mission is to represent, educate, advocate for, and serve New York's counties and the elected and appointed county officials who serve the public. NYSAC serves all 57 counties and the City of New York. NYSCEA represents New York’s 18 county executives and the mayor of the City of New York.
