Public Defender, Franklin County

Franklin County Personnel Office is accepting applications for a Public Defender, located within the Franklin County Public Defender’s Department. 

The incumbent will be in charge of overseeing professional employees, investigative and clerical employees.  This is a busy office providing criminal defense services to those unable to afford counsel as well as Family Court representation in cases requiring assigned counsel.  The Public Defender must provide effective legal representation to protect clients’ rights, including but not limited to filing motions, performing legal research, amending petitions, and conducting hearings and trials.  The Public Defender will be expected appear in various court systems to handle a variety of cases such as Felony cases, Family Court appearances, Misdemeanor cases in local criminal court and after hour arraignments.  Applicants must possess excellent communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills, and have the ability to juggle multiple responsibilities.  Successful applicants must show a commitment to representing low-income and underserved populations; a commitment to rural populations and an awareness of their unique issues is a plus.

Minimum Qualifications:  Graduation from a law institution of recognized standing.

Special Requirement:  Admission to the NYS Bar.
