NYSAC Reiterates Urgent Call for Fiscal Fairness in State Budget Process
This week, NYSAC renewed its call to New York State legislators to adopt a more equitable and responsible fiscal approach in the state budget process. In a letter to lawmakers earlier in the budget process, we emphasized a fundamental principle: government leaders must adhere to the same standards we ask of our constituents. Yet, counties continue to face a troubling double standard—held to a 2% property tax cap while being forced to absorb skyrocketing state mandates, some rising as much as 400%.
With up to 80% of county budgets consumed by mandated expenses and looming federal funding cuts, the pressure on local governments is unsustainable. We urged the State to mirror the fiscal discipline required of counties and either fund new mandates or limit cost increases to match allowable tax cap growth.
